How to Claim Abandoned Vehicles

Abandoned vehicles that have been taken into custody by the County of Hawai‘i may be claimed by the legal or registered owner only.

Follow these steps to claim and release your vehicle:

1. Call first to make an appointment.
   • Hilo Office: (808) 961-8552
   • Kona Office: (808) 327-3539
2. Gather required documents and bring to your appointment.
   • Picture identification 
   • Provide a title proving ownership (for vehicles not registered in Hawaiʻi) 
3. Pay all fees by cash or certified funds/money order.
   • Towing - fee varies by location
   • Storage - $10/per from tow date
   • Department admin fee $50.00
   • Any other related charge
